Portraiture: A Visual Syntax

I find peoples’ faces fascinating, their eyes, the lifelines visible on their skin, how they wear their hair and even their clothing convey a world of information. Using photographic references either taken myself, or gleaned from the internet’s public domain, Portraiture: a Visual Syntax is an ongoing series that focuses on capturing these facial qualities and life experiences.  Once the portrait is complete, I spend additional time with it contemplating what single word comes to mind when I view the individual I’ve capture in paint.  While the eyes are said to be the windows of the soul, I believe our skin, hair, and the adornments we choose to wear are also a reflection of who we are, who we choose to be and how we manage life’s challenges.
